The cliffs, winding rivers, hedged farmlands and numerous Medieval villages will invite you to make a stop: Auxerre, city of art and history, Mailly-le-Château on its rocky spur, not forgetting the opportunities for fishing or scaling the Rochers du Saussois for lovers of rock climbing. Armançon valley will lead you to the Canal de Bourgogne: Le Tonnerrois with its châteaux, abbeys and vineyards.
To travel the Canal de Bourgogne is to journey through the history of France, while sailing along one of our country’s most highly regarded waterways. An exceptional number of remarkable sites and monuments can be found alongside the canal. The most prestigious of all is undoubtedly the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay (classed as a World Heritage Site), but just a short walk or bicycle ride away you will find superb Burgundian châteaux such as those of Bussy, Tanlay, Ancy-le-Franc, Nuits and Maulne. The most prestigious wines in the world and Burgundy’s renowned cuisine await you at every stop along the canal. Should you wish, you can also continue your cruise along the Canal du Nivernais via Auxerre, and visit its Gothic cathedral and 11th century crypt.
